Online dating is pretty popular now to the point where virtually everyone’s heard of it. That doesn’t mean, however – that everyone has tried it – and with that comes a lot of people who’ve never done it before and would be considered ‘beginners.’
Whether you’re fresh off your last relationship or just getting back on the ole wagon again, dipping your toes into the depths of the online dating world can be an intimidating experience for folks. It’s important to remember though – that we were all beginners at something or other in our life – and if you follow a few handy tips, then you’ll be well on your way to a hopefully satisfying experience.
Put your time in
Anything that’s worth something takes time. That’s just the reality with everything and online dating is no different. There’s a really good chance that you’re not going to meet the man or woman of your dreams on your first date. It’s unlikely that you’ll hit it off with your first online match. And not everything is going to be a chemistry bomb from the get-go.
Learning yourself and others takes time. Building relationships takes time. So take that time, go at your pace and we promise that you’ll get more out of the experience.
Get a wingman
If you’re unsure of this whole thing, having a cheerleader can really help give you a boost of confidence. From helping to put your profile together to maybe being a great excuse to go on a double date – they can be a huge boost to your efforts.
They also help you avoid a common mistake – which is selling yourself short. Get a wingman or a partner in crime – they’re absolutely worth it!
Put your best foot forward
This is building off of the last point a bit – but choose good photos of yourself or maybe even get a second opinion. Research shows that people generally do a bad job of choosing their own photos and judging themselves in the best light. Don’t be afraid to ask for a second opinion.
Cast a wide net
It’s really important to not get bogged down in mindless details of fining precisely what you’re looking for. This isn’t Amazon, this is people we’re talking about. Be open minded about meeting different kinds of people as it gives you the opportunity to find a really great person even if they don’t tick all your boxes. In fact – if you have a list with boxes to check – we recommend you chuck it. Truth is – many couples have met and got together who would have never done so if they had stuck so rigidly to their model of a perfect person to date. Open your mind and cast a wide net.
What would you say if we told you this was supposed to be fun? Sometimes you’ll need a thick skin and we promise you that not every date will be perfect. But it’s important to chalk those up to experience and see the process as a fun hobby as opposed to a stressful chore and you’ll be surprised at how quickly you’ll find yourself having fun!
